Neighborhood Leaders for Today - Seven consecutive weeks in February and March
This one-of-a-kind leadership program gives citizens the confidence and tools they need to create, promote and sustain productive citizen-based neighborhood associations and to help develop sustainable community improvement projects. This class includes 35 hours of classroom study and over 30 different speakers all geared toward creating educated, well-equipped neighborhood leaders throughout the Oklahoma City Metro Area. Participants learn how to organize successful neighborhood groups, access City services, develop successful grant projects, organize neighborhood specific programs, navigate City Hall, establish membership drives, communicate effectively, and much more. Online registration is available January 1, 2012.
Organizing Your Neighborhood/ New Officer Training - first Tuesday each month
This beginners’ workshop gives residents the tools they need to get their neighborhood organized, as well as tips for being an effective neighborhood office. It’s offered the first Tuesday of each month at the Neighborhood Alliance Building. Light dinner is served. Register for this event by calling 528-6322.
Neighborhood Communications - March
This workshop is an overview of what neighborhoods can do to increase communications. It covers paper newsletters, digital newsletters, email, neighborhood websites and social networking sites. This workshop is offered as part of the Neighborhood Leaders for Today curriculum but open to all neighborhoods in OKC.
Parliamentary Procedure - March
This intense course relays to basics of keeping neighborhood meetings focused and effective using Parliamentary Procedure. Presented by the Sooner Unit Parliamentarians, this workshop is offered as part of the Neighborhood Leaders for Today curriculum but open to all neighborhoods in OKC.
Code Enforcement 101 – May
This workshop focuses on the reach of the City of OKC Action Center, the impact of zoning on code enforcement and some of the resources available to residents for taking care of their homes and neighborhoods. Residents learn how to proactively work with City officials to deal with code violations and facilities outages and help clean up their neighborhoods. Typical attendance for this workshop is 120-150 people.
Basic Legal Issues for HOAs – two sessions, June and July
This workshop for mandatory Homeowner Associations is always widely attended. HOAs have specific issues and this workshop addresses these with authority. Attorney Matthew Winton, local attorney and Community Association Law specialist, presents the basics, including covenants, bylaws and amendment procedures. The workshop finishes up with a generous Question & Answer session; typical attendance for this workshop is 70-90 people per session.
Beautification Station/Cruisin’ OKC – June
This free event features a chartered bus tour of the most beautiful volunteer-driven improvement projects in Oklahoma City. After the tour, attendees are treated to lunch and informal conversation to learn how they can complete a beautification project for their neighborhood! Five years running, this event offers our most sought-after seats.
Private Roads Maintenance - August
This new program is designed for HOAs with private roads. Road maintenance is a daunting task! We offer the opportunity to hear from neighborhoods that have been there/done that, as well as city and county departments that can offer alternative plans for private roads.
Advanced Legal Issues for HOAs – August
This workshop is for representatives of mandatory Homeowner Associations who have attended Basic Legal Issues. All attendees of the Basic workshops will receive an invitation to this advanced course.
Neighbors Night Out – September
Neighbors Night Out is the most enjoyable crime fighting tool out there! Studies support the idea that a social neighborhood is a safer neighborhood, so we encourage neighborhoods to throw a party and celebrate! NNO events can range from a porch-light vigil or flashlight walk to a catered picnic. Neighborhood Alliance not only collects and distributes information on neighborhood events throughout the metro, including maps and contacts, to OCPD, OCFD and city council, but also to volunteer groups, like Target Employees, wanting to lend a hand and be a part of the community-building fun.
Lunch & Learn Series – May through October
This new series will give residents the opportunity for in-depth learning of neighborhood communications skills. They’ll learn how to increase neighborhood communications from newsletters, websites and social networking sites to hold to hold effective meetings; they’ll hear specific tips about how to help make their neighborhoods more connected. Workshops are 2-hour lunch-time sessions in successive months.
Sixth Annual Good Neighbor Awards Banquet – November
Our year-end gala celebrating the exceptional effort of Central Oklahoma’s neighbors and neighborhoods has being delighting our constituents for five years. Nominations for awards are solicited starting in April for five award categories. This event announces the winners and tells the heart-warming stories of three finalists in each category of neighborly excellence.
